Armistice Agreement
ARTICLE 1 CLAUSE 1

1. A Military Demarcation Line shall be fixed and sides shall withdraw two (2) kilometers from this line so as to establish a demilitarized zone between the opposing forces. A demilitarized zone shall be established as a buffer zone to prevent the occurrence of incidents which might lead to a resumption of hostilities.

ARTICLE 1 CLAUSE 2 - 3

2. The military demarcation line is located as indicated on the attached map (Map 1).
3. The demilitarized zone is defined by a northern and a southern boundary as indicated on the attached map (Map 1).

For compliance of the Armistice Agreement, Article 5 of the Inter-Korean Basic Agreement stipulates as follows: “The South and the North shall work together to transform the current status of armistice into a status of solid peace, and shall comply with the existing Armistice Agreement until such status of peace is established.” The ‘existing Armistice Agreement’ stated in Article 5 of the Basic Agreement includes clauses of the Armistice Agreement, the clause can be interpreter as a foundation for implementation and maintenance of the DMZ.
