The tunnel was discovered through a scientific tunnel detection method, according to Kim, Pu-Song`s testimony. After Infiltration Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2 were discovered, it was determined that the North was excavating infiltration tunnels all along the DMZ.
Tunnel No. 3 is much more threatening than Infiltration Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2. It is located 4km northwest of Imjingak, 3.5km from the civilian homes of the Unification Village (Tongilchon), and only 44km from Seoul.
It is very obvious that North Korea planned to use the tunnel not only for wartime purposes, but also for armed guerrilla infiltration during periods of turbulences in the South.
